About Me
Kathryn Markel – Owner Kathryn Markel Fine Arts
I opened my art gallery, Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, in 1975, and so this September marks the 33rd year I’ve experienced the eager nervousness of a new art season in New York. Yikes. Over that time, some things have changed radically but most have not. There’s still the same “new notebook”, newly painted gallery sense of excitement about the new artists, new art by familiar artists, and new brave galleries with new kinds of programming. It’s been a wonderful life in the art world – and I hope, through this blog, to share with you the visual richness and intellectual thrills the art world has to offer.
As a dealer I have spent my career trying to make art accessible to the average person, trying to explain why a painter paints what she does, trying to sell art that is reasonably priced, and trying to present art as a joy rather than a kind of intellectual language that speaks only to an elite art world. Well before the days of blogs, I wrote advice for the artlorn on a web site at www.theartlady.com. The site is filled with information about the contemporary art market. This blog will be a continuation and expansion of that web site.
Navigating the contemporary art world requires a learning curve just as mastering any other subject be it baseball or opera. It takes time and effort but I hope this blog gives you some of the tools to help you. We’re happy to answer questions the best we can. Feel free to email us at markel@markelfinearts.com

A very refreshing article. It sounds like a very resonable approach. I wish you well with educating the general public on how to look at art and actually appreciate it for what the artist is trying to express.

God Bless You, Kathryn, for being down-to-earth, and having an honest and forthright approach to this particular form of spirituality which sees its most glorious highs, and its basest lows.
Like you, I, too, have been around this sophisticated art world since 1973, although, not in a public capacity. You, your blog, and this website will be referrals I shall make to anyone who desires to enter the art collecting field. I’m very glad you exist. Integrity in our business is in short supply.
Congratulations on your continued success, and personal excellence! Thank you for this much needed service you are providing to art lovers worldwide.

Hi Kathryn,
I hope that you are well. I wanted to let you know I am in a show at The Painting Center in Feb…and I thought you might like to see the work. I think you may like it. I will send you the press release at the gallery. Stop by if you can.
Best Regards,
Bonnie
